Book Launch: Divergence in Architectural Research

The essays in this volume have come together under the theme “Divergence in Architectural Research” and present a snapshot of Ph.D. research being conducted in over thirty architectural research institutions, representing fourteen countries around the world. These essays also provide a window into the presentations and discussions that took place on March 5-6, 2020, during the Ph.D. Symposium “Divergence in Architectural Research,” under the auspices of the School of Architecture, Georgia Institute of Technology, in Atlanta, Georgia.

4S Conference 2021: Call for Papers for Open Panel

109. Interrupted Processes: Technology, Creativity and Design

Hayri Dortdivanlioglu, Georgia Institute of Technology; Vernelle A Noel, University of Florida

This panel focuses on consequences of technological interruptions in design from STS perspectives, and questions what we lose to these interruptions through feminist lenses. Technology’s disruption of the social has long been a topic in STS. Our panel extends this inquiry into technological interruptions in the practice of design where outcomes impact the social politically and economically. Design is often framed in opposition to craft as mental activity versus embodied activity. In contrast to this false dichotomy, we see design as a craft performing in a network of mind, body, tools, and matter. These sympathetic relationships between mind and hands, hands and tools, tools and matter play creative roles in design processes. Read more...

47. Craft, Computers, and Conquest: Renegotiating relations

Vernelle A Noel, University of Florida; Hayri Dortdivanlioglu, Georgia Institute of Technology

Situated Computations is an approach to design and computation that grounds technologies in the social world by acknowledging the historical, cultural, and material contexts of designing and making. It acknowledges and responds to a setting’s social and technological infrastructures, and refuses to remain ignorant of economic and political structures that shape it (Noel 2020). In conversation with the conference theme, we invite scholarship that reflects on manual and digital practices to reveal ways in which existing and new oppressions in these sites are maintained or challenged. Ph.D. Symposium: Divergence in Architectural Research

The Ph.D. Symposium Divergence in Architectural Research will take place on the Georgia Tech campus on March 5-6, 2019. It is organized by the ConCave Ph.D. student group in the College of Design. The symposium will highlight the interdisciplinary nature of architectural research taking place at Georgia Tech, across the five schools of the College of Design, across variousprograms in the Institute, as well as at other architectural research programs. By divergence, we mean the multiple methodologies and epistemological frameworks operating today across this spectrum of concentrations. The symposium will create a platform for Ph.D. students and will bring attention to the state of agency in this research and the emergent future directionsthis portends. Over two days, the symposium will host five paper presentation sessions, severalworkshops, and two keynotes from established scholars.

Deadline for Abstract Submission: Extended till September 20, 2019
